The Mt. San Jacinto College Art Gallery will display “Picking up the Pieces,” a multi-media artwork advocating suicide prevention, by Los Angeles artist Stacey Wexler from April 9 until April 30.
This project was conceived by Stacey Wexler in cooperation with Harbor View House in San Pedro California. Ms. Wexler envisioned a large-scale, wall-mounted puzzle with a few missing pieces serving as a metaphor for aspects of mental states. Like the many individual puzzle pieces, suicide is most often prevented by a collective sense of concern.
Ms. Wexler developed this idea by including residents from Harbor View House – a residential facility supporting individuals with mental and emotional disabilities. Many of the puzzle pieces were painted by Harbor View residents under the guidance of Ms. Wexler. Picking up the Pieces has been displayed at Zask Gallery in Rancho Palos Verdes and at Harbor View House.
Stacey Wexler will be at the gallery from April 9-11. She will be on hand to assist gallery viewers in creating puzzle pieces to expand the work. Interested individuals are invited to contribute their own expressions of mental and emotional states of being in relation to suicide prevention.
The work represents a wide range of images that include text, faces, and rich abstractions of color and texture.
The public reception for Picking up the Pieces will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9, at the San Jacinto Campus Art Gallery, 1499 N. State St., San Jacinto.
Stacey Wexler will be available for any questions regarding the installation. Refreshments will be served.
Art Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
The event is free and open to the public.
