The pastor of Orange County’s largest superchurch announced that his adult son had committed suicide, a church spokesman said today.

Matthew Warren, 27, was found dead Friday night, said Rick Warren, pastor of Saddleback Church, in a statement released by the church.

“Today, after a fun evening together with Kay and me, in a momentary wave of despair at his home, he took his life,” the pastor announced in a
letter to his staff.

Rick Warren is a major figure in the American evangelical movement, and has hosted discussions between Barack Obama and his two Republican challengers.

Evangelist Greg Laurie, an organizer of the Harvest Crusades, said he also “had a son die, so I have a sense of the pain Rick and Kay are facing.”

Matthew Warren was the youngest son in the Warren family.

“Only those closest knew that he struggled from birth with mental illness, dark holes of depression, and even suicidal thoughts,” the pastor
wrote in his statement, which was released by Laurie. “In spite of America’s best doctors, meds, counselors and prayers for healing, the torture of mental illness never subsided.”

No one was available at the Saddleback Church today, and no memorial was immediately scheduled.

Puzzle pieces

Stacey Wexler’s work “Picking up the Pieces,” courtesy of Mt. San Jacinto College

The Mt. San Jacinto College Art Gallery will display “Picking up the Pieces,” a multi-media artwork advocating suicide prevention, by Los Angeles artist Stacey Wexler from April 9 until April 30.

This project was conceived by Stacey Wexler in cooperation with Harbor View House in San Pedro California. Ms. Wexler envisioned a large-scale, wall-mounted puzzle with a few missing pieces serving as a metaphor for aspects of mental states. Like the many individual puzzle pieces, suicide is most often prevented by a collective sense of concern.

Ms. Wexler developed this idea by including residents from Harbor View House – a residential facility supporting individuals with mental and emotional disabilities. Many of the puzzle pieces were painted by Harbor View residents under the guidance of Ms. Wexler. Picking up the Pieces has been displayed at Zask Gallery in Rancho Palos Verdes and at Harbor View House.

Stacey Wexler will be at the gallery from April 9-11. She will be on hand to assist gallery viewers in creating puzzle pieces to expand the work.  Interested individuals are invited to contribute their own expressions of mental and emotional states of being in relation to suicide prevention.

The work represents a wide range of images that include text, faces, and rich abstractions of color and texture.

The public reception for Picking up the Pieces will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9, at the San Jacinto Campus Art Gallery, 1499 N. State St., San Jacinto.

Stacey Wexler will be available for any questions regarding the installation. Refreshments will be served.

Art Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public.

For more information, or to interview the artists, please contact Joe Posadas at 951-487-3585, orby e-mail at jposadas@msjc.edu.

The incident at Bermuda and Labrador drives began around 8 p.m., Sunday Apr. 14, when someone noticed a man on the ground in a front yard and called an ambulance, a news photographer reported from the scene.

The man declined an offer of help and blew himself up, a neighbor said.

Personnel from the Orange County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad and Orange County Fire Authority Hazardous Materials Unit rushed to the home and began searching for other explosives, detonating a box at the scene, according to the photographer.

The Orange County coroner confirmed a death in Costa Mesa Sunday night and referred reporters to the Costa Mesa Police Department, which said details would be released only later this morning.

Dispatchers received a call at 10:30 p.m. Saturday about the unidentified man his roommate said cut his arms during a suicide attempt. They went to the 24000 block of Fir Avenue, Riverside County sheriff’s Sgt. Lisa McConnell said.

Deputies coaxed the distraught man to come out of a locked bathroom. When he did, and dropped the knife as ordered, the man suddenly bent down and grabbed the knife. He allegedly raised the knife above his head and threatened the deputies, McConnell said.

The man then walked toward the deputies and was shot once. Paramedics took the injured man to a local hospital for treatment of a non-life threatening gunshot wound and self-inflicted lacerations, McConnell said.

Sheriff’s authorities have not been able to positively identified the suicidal man, McConnell said.

The deputy who opened fire was placed on paid administrative leave. The sergeant said the investigation was ongoing.

A man drove up to the apex of the Vincent Thomas Bridge in San Pedro last night, scaled the security fence, and jumped to his death, a Port of Los Angeles official said.

Witnesses on the bridge saw the man — believed to have been in his 40s — drive his car up to the apex just after 8 p.m. and get out with the headlights on and engine running, Port of Los Angeles spokesman Phillip Sanfield said.

“He did a quick scale of the fence — a 10-to-12-foot fence,” Sanfield said.

“There were witnesses on the bridge who saw him jump and witnesses on the water who saw him land,” he said. “A passenger boat retrieved the man and contacted port police who responded and administered CPR until an L.A. Fire boat arrived,” Sanfield said.

Firefighters pronounced the man dead at the scene, he said.

It is the same bridge and the same spot from which “Top Gun” director Tony Scott jumped to his death last August, Sanfield said.

The 10-to-12-foot chain link security fence “is not easy to scale,” he said.

The port does not keep statistics on suicide jumps because the bridge is owned by Caltrans, Sanfield said, but “they do happen on occasion.”
